Aetna Prescription Plan: PPI Inhibitors

On January 1, 2004, Aetna implemented a precertification requirement for proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs. However, Aetna never loaded this requirement into their pharmacy system for New Jersey HMO members. (Any individual who has designated a Primary Care Physician (PCP) in New Jersey is considered a New Jersey HMO member.)

Effective May 3, 2004, Aetna fixed their pharmacy system to accurately reflect the precertification requirement. Any individual who needs to fill a new prescription, or simply get a refill, will need to have the drug precertified. In order to do so, the individual should contact the prescribing physician, who will in turn contact Aetna's pharmacy department.

Proton pump inhibitors are a group of prescription drugs used to treat people with heartburn, ulcers of the stomach or intestine, or excess stomach acid. These drugs include: Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Protonix, and Aciphex.
